Philosophy of Education:
This literature unit is centered around progressivism. This means that while teaching, I am focusing on the whole child rather than the content. I want the students in my class to learn the required skill by experimentation. The students will become problem solvers and include their individual experiences in the context. As the teacher, I want to provide as many hands-on experiences I can to enhance their learning. This study shows that by using hands-on activities I will reach the resistant readers.

How the Goals are Met:
As part of this unit, the students will be in small groups and conduct research on an important leader or event that occurred during the Civil Rights Movement. The students are to put the information they find into a PowerPoint and present it to the class during the final day of the unit. By conducting research and presenting the material to the class, the students will be achieving the above SOL's.
